Qualified Medical Examinations (QME)

When workers' compensation and other medical-legal cases hit a dispute, an independent medical opinion can decide the outcome. TruVida Health performs Qualified Medical Examinations and related medical-legal evaluations to clarify diagnoses, whether a condition is work-related, and what a person can functionally do.

What Is a Qualified Medical Examination?

In California workers' compensation cases, a Qualified Medical Evaluation is an independent exam ordered when diagnosis, treatment, or disability is in dispute. The Qualified Medical Evaluator — a licensed physician authorized for this role — delivers an impartial opinion and a detailed written report that can shape benefit decisions.

The specific terminology and legal requirements come from the Division of Workers' Compensation, but the core principle never changes: the examiner is a neutral evaluator, not your treating doctor.

When a Qualified Medical Examination May Be Requested

These evaluations typically exist to answer questions like:

  • Did work cause this condition, or something else?
  • Has the injury reached maximum medical improvement (MMI)?
  • How significant is the permanent impairment or functional limitation?
  • What continuing medical care is reasonable and necessary?

Depending on the case, the request may come from an employer, an insurer, an attorney, or sometimes the patient.

What to Expect at TruVida Health

Step 1: Record Review

A careful review of your prior medical records, imaging, and test results.

Step 2: History & Examination

A structured interview covering your symptoms, job duties, and medical history, followed by a physical exam concentrated on the issues under dispute.

Step 3: Additional Testing if Indicated

Labs or imaging are ordered only when they're needed to settle the diagnosis.

Step 4: Medical-Legal Report

A comprehensive written report that answers the specific questions in the referral — objective findings, diagnoses, and opinions backed by medical evidence.

Important Distinctions

  • The examiner's job is an objective opinion, not ongoing treatment as your primary physician.
  • All recommendations are framed by the relevant laws and guidelines.
  • Keep following up with your own treating clinicians for your regular care.
